  2. Hey Johhny,

Just want to say your blog is both A really interesting and B really helpful. Myself and two friends (two of us with kickboxing, boxing and TKD experience and the other with no martial arts background at all) are planning on heading to Thailand in March.

I think we have settled on Phuket as it has such a wide variety of training packages etc and will be good for our friend with xero experience. And within Phuket we have probably deciced on Tiger or Top team although reasearch is still only beginning.

However, looking at their accmodation videos and prices and then comparing it to your video and price and I just can't help but thinmk we would be taken advantage of.

Having been to Phuket before, do you think it is possible or could you recommend any accomodation such as what you have in Chiang Mai??

Would truly appreciate your help and I will be following your journey closely. Hope you remain injury free.

    1. And seriously sorry about misspelling your name. Cardinal sin number one in trying to type quickly (I had to rewrite my post as it disappeared into the net when I hit publish).

  3. Hey Darragh, how long are you two planning on training for? Accommodation in Phuket is a lot more expensive than it is in Chiang Mai. Just like accommodation in New York City would be a lot more than in Texas, or Central London vs. the country side.

The only way to get more value for your money accommodation wise in Phuket is if you plan on staying for more than a few months and you find an apartment that local thais live in. The problem with them is the landlord won't speak english and the apartments will be hard to find. They'll basically be word of mouth through the thai trainers, but they won't want the hassle unless A. they already know you for at least a few weeks or a month, and B. if you're staying for at least a few more months.

Examples: On the main road near Phuket Zoo, my friend rented a place for 6,000 baht a month that was equivalent to mine. Also a few friends rented an actual 3 bedroom house for around 10,000 baht a month and split it. This was located near the korean bbq restaurant on the main road behind tiger. These directions won't make sense until you've actually been living in Phuket for a while. And both places are a bit too far to walk to training so you'd have to hire a motorbike.

Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions.

  4. Its Darragh again. Apologies for the late reply and many thanks for your speedy reply. There is no access to social sites in work which this is deemed to be, hence the delay. Also, looking back at my spelling and my god was it atrocious and rushed in the last post.

Well the two of us with the kickboxing experience want to train for at least three months. I haven’t spoken to them for a while as we are all in different countries at the minute but would hopefully get something to accommodate all three of us in the same spot.

What did you make of the Tiger accommodation? From what I’ve read the wifi is pretty weak. And although the benefits are there for living beside camp I would also like to see alot of Thailand but thinking Tiger might be a bit isolated. What is your experience with this?

I’d quite like to go to a less touristy region to, in order to explore. And well, money talks at the end of the day.

Looking forward to seeing more of your videos. And your right about TKD.

Also, going to really hammer home the questions now. But would you recommend Top team? I've read bits of your blog on it and it seems quiet good atleast for two of us. And how much do you spend on food? Does the lack of your own kitchen hurt? And do Tiger add some crazt charge at the desk which is not advertised online?

  5. Hey Darragh, no worries about your erroneous spelling bro, we're casual here at my fight camp, and by we,it's just me, sitting here drinking a protein, chia seed and coconut milk shake while typing this.

Anyways, unless the remodeled it recently most of the rooms at TMT itself are old, dark and remind me a bit of jail, with the exception of the ones in the back row. I didn't mind it at all personally but most people and all girls would hate it. What countries are you guys from by the way? If you want a nice place, but for closer to the 10,000 baht range, there are some nice hotels with swimming pools next to tiger, called Baan Suan and Floraville to name a few. Around Tiger and Top Team (they are on the same street) is basically just training and western friendly thai restaurants, mainly Tony's and Ja Ja house. Food there was 60 - 100 baht per meal on average ($2-$3us)But if you look through my blog there are two posts, one is "Actual Living Costs" and another is about the 30 baht ($1 buffet) Not having a kitchen is totally fine, food here is so cheap anyways.

The good thing about Phuket is that you are close to three really nice islands, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, and Krabi, which are all a 3-4 hour boat ride away, so you can easily spend a few days at each. There are no less touristy regions in phuket.

Wifi at TMT the first time I stayed there was horrible, then they upgraded it and it was really damn good.

The only crazy charges that TMT adds at the desk would be for motorbike rental if you get it through them. Other than that, and the fact that you have to buy your own gloves and shin pads, there are no hidden fees. Although you won't get a refund if you pay for 3 months up front and end up not being able to train.

I would recommend either Tiger Muay Thai or Phuket Top Team. I liked TMT for being large, well organized, connected, and the pride of being with a cool gym. I liked Top Team for being small, intimate and having newer facilities and equipment.
