Three months training at Tiger Muay Thai

I have all good things to say about training and living at Tiger Muay Thai in Phuket.  It's a big gym, and with any gym that popular there will be good as well as bad reviews.  My best advice is to go check it out for yourself with an open mind and decide for yourself.  I personally had a great time there and it was exactly what I was looking for.

The reason why I chose TMT over the other gyms is mainly because they offered both Muay Thai and MMA/Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.  Also because they had a really good website that made it extremely clear what I would be paying and what to expect.  Most other gyms in Thailand don't have very descriptive websites.  I looked into training at Fairtex Bangplee but Tiger Muay Thai was much cheaper.

Cost for 1 month of accommodation and training at Fairtex Bangplee/Pattaya (including 2 meals a day)
Fan Room + MMA and Muay Thai Training: 16,100 a week or 64,440 a month.($2,148 US Dollars a month)

Cost for 1 month of accommodation and training at Tiger Muay Thai, Phuket (calculated to include 2 meals a day)
Fan Room + MMA and Muay Thai Training: 15,000 a month + 6,000 for food.  ($700 US Dollars a Month)

Why is Fairtex so much more expensive than Tiger Muay Thai?

I have no idea and can't say because I haven't personally trained at Fairtex.  I've heard great things about Fairtex, especially the one in San Francisco where my friend trains at, and the one in Bangplee, but I could never afford to play that much for a training camp, especially not in Thailand where things are supposed to be cheaper.

Training at Tiger Muay Thai with Yod and UFC/Bellator's Roger Huerta

Definetely one of the coolest things about training at Tiger Muay Thai is the people you meet.  TMT has a lot of pull and some great connections.  Plus the Head MMA Coach Magical Ray Elbe is a current and active fighter, which is very cool.  I also had the pleasure of meeting and being taught by some legends during my three months at TMT including the one and only Royce Gracie who came by to do a one day seminar.

The Training at Tiger Muay Thai was Great.

I started in beginners MMA and even though I had some experience in Muay Thai already, because I was out of shape I decided to start from scratch and do the beginners Muay Thai as well.  In the three months I moved up to Intermediate, and then to Advanced Muay Thai.  I also improved a ton in the Western Boxing class, taught by Chok Chai who once fought against Manny Pacquiao.

Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu turns out to be something that is going to take me a couple of years to get good at, so I was pretty happy just staying in the beginners class, which was more of an intermediate class anyways.

I had a fantastic three month training camp at Tiger Muay Thai and recommend it to others.  It's worth coming to Thailand for as many people did from the UK, America, Denmark, Sweden and Australia.

Dragon Muay Thai and Suwit Muay Thai:

On the same street as Tiger Muay Thai, there are two Muay Thai only gyms, Dragon and Suwit.  Both are a lot smaller and don't have the facilities or MMA program but from what I heard are good gyms and are a little bit cheaper than training at Tiger.  I personally chose to stay at TMT because I liked having the option to do Western Boxing, BJJ, Kettle Bells, and I really liked the facilities itself.

Plus I found out the secret discount at Tiger Muay Thai.  Well, it's not really a secret, but most people don't know about it.  Just pay online on the Tiger Muay Thai website using Paypal and you'll get a 5,500 baht ($183usd) discount on three months of training!

Warm Regards,

My Fight Camp.

P.S. If you're thinking about coming to train Muay Thai in Thailand, do yourself a favor and read the book before you come.  It'll save you a ton of time, money and headache. A million times worth the $9.99 it's on sale for.

Looks wicked bud. I started my MMA training when living on PP, and have continued it now I'v moved back to South Africa. If you're ever in Johannsburg come to Fight Fit Militia. Our trainers here hold at the moment hold the lightweight, Middle and heavy weight titles in EFC Africa (Extreme Fighting Championship: basically South African UFC). Wil definitely check out Tiger when back in Thailand. So keen for the 3 month course!

    Cheers

  2. Do you happen to have any pictures of the fighter rooms at TMT? What are the shared bathrooms like?

    ReplyDelete
  3. Hey Terrible - I never took photos of my room at TMT but to describe it...it's not pretty but it's convenient, decently comfortable and has everything you need. Small twin bed in most rooms and about the size of three twin beds. The rooms could use a fresh coat of paint. Also if you bring a girl back there, she'll more than likely not want to come back. But it was good enough for me.

The bathrooms are very big but dark, old paint, cold showers. There is one hot water shower but it's usually broken. Again, not pretty, but I got used to it and was able to cope.

If you want something nicer, live off site. Hope that answers your questions.

Hi , I'm heading out in September , are there any hidden fees that arnt on the website? And if I pay on the day am I likely to get accommodation? Thanks, rob!

    ReplyDelete
  5. Hey Rob -

Accommodation - The onsite rooms are booked up months in advance so you'd need to prebook if you want a cheap fan room on site. However if you don't mind paying 10,000 baht or so for an A/C room you can just show up.

Hidden Fees - There aren't any hidden fees per say, but there are things that you will end up paying for more that you don't expect. Things like renting a motorbike and getting a room through the gym is more expensive than if you walked down the road and did it yourself. Also budget yourself to buy a pair of 16oz gloves, hand wraps and shorts. Or you'll need to spend money renting them.

    Good luck out in Sept!

Hey, I too shall be down there in September. You said that it would be cheaper to not book my accommodations through tmt right? Is it worth the inconvenience of just showing up to one of the hotels near the camp? Thanks, this blog is realy helpful.

    ReplyDelete
  8. It's up to you - If you book through TMT they charge a commission, but they will do the work for you and secure you a room.

If you just show up, it'll be cheaper. Hotels near TMT are Floraville and Cocoville, which you may be able to contact yourself.

    Have a good training camp!

Thanks a lot! Appreciate the information. I checked out Floraville, it looks like a nice hotel.

I also wanted to know, did you get the meal plan with TMT? Is it worth the 7500 thb, or should I fend for myself?

    Thanks, Charlie

    ReplyDelete
  10. Charlie - Floraville is an awesome place and it's literally a 1 minute walk from Tiger Muay Thai. They also have a great restaurant.

For the meal plan I've heard TMT has improved it recently, but in the past I know a few people that wish they didn't sign up for it. I enjoy eating at the Tiger Grill especially for lunch when they have the BBQs, but most people end up eating at Tony's, Ja Ja's, or even Floraville.

    Have a good trip.

  11. This blog is awesome, im also planning on going out there in september, for 3 months, how much did you spend in the 3 months there altogether, as i am trying to figure out my budget!!!

Also, im female and i know it will probably be the majority men but just wondering if you get many females turning up there?

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Hey glad you like the blog. Check out this post for what I would spend each month on average: http://myfightcamp.blogspot.com/2011/06/actual-monthly-living-costs-training.html

There are plenty of women around so don't worry. Definetely majority men, but there are always a few girls in each class especially things like Beginners Muay Thai and Bodyfit.

Have fun and let me know how you find it.

  13. hi ,

just what you mentioned about the discount of paying with paypal, is that for paying for training and accomadation online, or like what is the minmum amount you must pay in order to get the discount.

    cheers

    lawrence

    ReplyDelete
  14. Lawrence if you go to the TMT website and go to "online booking" you will see that that prices for paying via paypal are a lot cheaper than paying in person, and you get an even bigger discount for paying for 3 months at a time.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Hi! I really like this information.
I'm planning a 3 month (hopefully 4 month if the budget allow) muay thai trip. TMT really seems to be great, but you said that Floraville and Cocoville is cheaper to live at? Are u sure, cause when you look at their website TMT is cheaper.
Do you know any other budget place to be in near TMT?
    I approciate all anwears!
    take care

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hey Frazen, Read it again. I said booking through floraville and cocoville directly is cheaper than doing it through the TMT office, since you don't have to pay booking commission. The budget rooms at TMT itself are of course cheaper than staying in a nice hotel.

    ReplyDelete
  17. how much money would you need for 3 months for water laundry and equipment etc many thanks

    ReplyDelete
  18. Search on my blog for my article on "Actual living expenses" I broke it all down for you. Equipment is going to be around $180US - $200US if you buy shorts, wraps, gloves and shin guards.

    ReplyDelete
  19. hey! im off to TMT in january, just wondering what the internet is like? it says they have free wifi, is it good enough for skype? Cheers

    ReplyDelete
  20. When I was there last year it was plenty fine for Skyping. I've heard some rooms are better than others for internet connectivity so if it's slow, you can always just bring your laptop over to the main area.

TMT's network blocks all torrents so it's pretty quick since no one's downloading movies and porn all day.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Hey cheers for that! im excited but quite nervous, is there anything i should know before going? ill be training for a month, i have some thai experience but not heaps! reading your blogs has been helpful tho! especially the cost one, im going to take some spending money for sure!

are there many girls there? (i am one...)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hey don't be nervous - life is good out here and you don't need much Thai experience at all. The only thing you'll need to know so you don't get ripped off is how to properly take a taxi from the airport to the gym. I'll write up a more detailed post about it along with some horror stories, but the best way to to walk to the right when you exit the airport and look for the "Meter Taxi" stand.

Have a print out of the name and address of the gym, along with the phone number and make sure they know it's the one in Chalong. The price should be 600baht maximum. Do not pay more than 600 baht.

That's it! When do you plan on coming? Right now there are probably 15 girls or so in total training at Tiger Muay Thai and Phuket Top Team, so you should be fine if you ever need to burrow some mascara or whatever you girls do. =)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hey there, thanks for sharing your experiences made at TMT!

One Question though. How crowded was it?

I've heard people saying that TMT has become so busy, that it even affects training quality. I am afraid that trainers stop to care.

Furthermore I am off to Thailand in March, which is kind of the peak during "high season".

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  24. During high season there are usually 200 people training at TMT. The beginners Muay Thai class, which is the largest has up to 40-50 per class. The advanced class is more manageable.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hi.nice blog.very informative!
You at PTT at the moment right?was planning n coming over for a months training and just wanted to find out if you need any experience in muay thai/mma if you want to train at PTT?
    Is the training intense?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hey, I just leave PTT a few weeks ago to go traveling. You don't need any prior experience to train at PTT, the training is intense but you can start off by doing just one class a day instead of two.

If the info is too quick for you, you can always start by taking a private lesson or two. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Hi, firstly I want to say thanks for sharing your experience. I am now planing go to Thailand for 4 months. Three months training one month I would like to make a trip to India.
I am now just about to set the exact date. When is the good time to there if you have option to choose. Just thinking about rains. Or it doesn't matter if going mainly to training.
    Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  28. Anytime is good to go if you're going to the west coast, phuket side. If you're going to the Koh Tao side, avoid November. Aside from that it doesn' tmatter too much if you're training. Even during rainy season it's sunny and hot half the the week.

Make sure you get your Indian Visa before you come to Thailand as it's very hard to get while you're here. Good luck.

    ReplyDelete
  29. If my flight reaches Phuket at 21:30, 9:30 pm- Will Tiger Muay Thai stuff fetch me in the airport if i request for the service ? (cuz, operating hours are 0700 to 1900)

Alternatively, could i just go somewhere nearby the camp and rent a room at that hour?

    ReplyDelete
  30. I would suggest you contact Tiger and make sure they pick you up and have night security check you into your room if possible. It'll be 11pm by the time you get to the camp and by then most hotels will be closed. You can always go to Tony's Restaurant but it's a 1km walk and with luggage isn't easy.

    ReplyDelete
  31. STAY AWAY FROM TONYS... he is a cheating, money hungry little asshole, he ripped myself and my girlfriend off for 600 baht too much for the ferry to phi phi, go across the road to JA JA he is an absolute gentleman and will gladly help you with anything you need to know about the surronding area, he has rooms to rent, motorbikes and the best food for its price in the area and only charges a very small commission on tours to cover the cost of his leaflets and phone calls, tony is a dirty little pig and picking his nose and eating flies he kills on front of everyone demonstrates it perfectly.... 'good protein' he said when i caught him at it!! excellent blog boss, im just at the end of a month training here, great idea to pay for it with pay pal and if your serious about training stay on the camp and you'll have no excuse to miss training, ill be back for 3 months soon

    ReplyDelete
  32. Thanks Bro. U the best.
One more question. More like questions...

If I hv an entire Sunday, ( heard no training on Sundays)
I would like to rent a car and head to patong beach. Probably buy some cheap MMA / Muay Thai shorts.

    1. Is there any car rental near TMT? So that I can return the car easily.
    2. Where can I get cheap MMA / muaythai shorts. Brand or quality is not an issue to me, jus need them for 2 weeks there.
    3. Are the gears at Phuket fight store over priced?

    Thanks u,
    Harris

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The gear, including MMA and Muay Thai shorts are cheaper at the Phuket Fight Store than in Patong. You can rent a car on the TMT/PTT street, at Tony's or the other shops but I'd reccomend not driving in Thailand. Just get a taxi instead.

The prices of gear at the fight store are pretty good, cheapest i've seen in thailand at least. People say there are cheaper places in Bangkok but I haven't seen it.

hey your blog's been super helpful, I was wondering though, what did you do about food? I was looking at the meal plan but I'm not looking to lose weight and I'm worried 2 meals a day won't be enough. what did you do? just buy food from the gym when you needed it? or get food from the local restaurants?
    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hey what's up, I'm glad my blog has been helpful. As for food, it's easy to get. On the street where all the gyms are, there are at least 7 local restaurants now. I usually eat at Tony's, Ja-Ja's and Nature house, I switch it up so I don't get bored. Thai food is cheap and good, like $2-3 per dish which can be an entire meal. You can also look through my blog for the 30 baht buffet, ($1) and there is also all you can eat BBQ's for about $6 you can go to at night. I didn't do the meal plan myself, but if you do, you can always supplement by eating out as well.

  36. Hi there,

First of all I'd like to say that this is an awesome blog that I'll be following for quite some time. I'm planning to go train in Thailand next year, for 4 to 6 weeks at Tiger Muay Thai. I'm currently looking at accommodation and I was wondering what your experiences with Tiger's rooms are. Would you recommend any of the cheaper rooms they have?

    Many thanks in advance!

    1. Hey Kevin, glad you are enjoying the blog. 4-6 weeks at TMT will be awesome. Just make sure you book 3-4 months in advance as the budget rooms fill up quickly. I stayed in them for 3 months and enjoyed being on site. The only downsides to it were the shared bathrooms and that the rooms are a bit old. If you're used to very basic, old rooms, then you'll be fine, but if you want something nicer, there are resorts across the street. Make sure you read "12 Weeks in Thailand" before you come, it'll answer a lot of questions you might have an save you a ton of money and headache when you get here. www.12weeksinthailand.com

    3. It looks like TMT only takes Paypal now for online bookings so no more Paypal specific discount. But it still might be a good idea to prepay for accommodation in advance if you want to live at the camp.

I tried clicking on the link you provided where you describe how much you spent on food/laundry/water and it would not let me??

Also I am female and my mate who was meant to be coming with me had to pull out,
I know there is female at the camp but are they all fighters?or is there females like me that just want to lose weight and get fit??

If you haven't already, read the book, www.12WeeksinThailand.com - it has a couple more month's examples of my actual living costs broken down and other things that you'll wish you knew before going.

As for being female, there are a lot of girls training at Tiger Muay Thai just to get fit, dont' worry about it. =)

What you've put together here is immense. I'm starting my 12 weeks next Tuesday and cannot wait. I coincidentally I came across your blog the day I booked my trip a few weeks ago and also got your book which has been a top asset. I'm starting out Bangkok @ Luktupfah and then head to Phuket for 10 weeks to train at Tiger for 2 weeks which I hope will be better than the reviews suggest. Either way I cannot wait! http://muaythaiadventure.wordpress.com

Enjoy your time in Bangkok and at TMT, I had a great time there so I'm sure it'll be pleasent. If you can swap them around, it would be better to do Phuket first, and Bangkok after.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Hey Birgit, I would personally skip the meal plan. The closest beach is 20 minutes away, but honestly, stay near the gym and go to the beach to hang out afterwards as you'll miss training a lot or have to run home because you forgot something (gloves, shorts, hand wraps, etc) all of the time. If you haven't already, make sure you read 12 Weeks in Thailand before you come, as it'll give you a good idea of what life is like there.

      Delete
  41. Hi Birgit, if you're going to TMT for training don't take a room near the beach as you'll end up skipping 90% of the classes. It's much better to take a room near the gym and go to beach during your off time. If you haven't already, make sure you read the book at www.12WeeksinThailand.com before you go, as it'll give you a good insight on what the life and daily schedule is like out there.
