Two books You Must Read before comming to Thailand

Hey guys, a lot of you who have been following My Fight Camp for a while has seen me go through a lot these past few years.  I started in 2008 with a 3-week vacation to Thailand. Came back to scuba dive and eventually fell in love with the art of Muay Thai.

I spent the next couple of years training at the best MMA and Muay Thai gyms across Thailand and living as cheaply as possible.  I loved it.  Ever since watching The Ultimate Fighter reality show, I wanted to live in a house with other fighters and have no responsibilities aside from training and fighting.

My first book, and the first one you should read is:

www.12WeeksinThailand.com
Why you should read 12 Weeks:

I've made tons of mistakes when first coming out to Thailand and wasted hundreds if now thousands of dollars that I could have easily saved if I knew these tips.  I guarantee that even the money you'll save from not getting scammed at the airport taxi in phuket will save you more than the cost of this book.

I still get tons of questions regarding the cost of living in Thailand, what the best Muay Thai or MMA gym in Thailand is, or what type of Visa they should get before coming.  12 Weeks in Thailand: The Good Life on the Cheap goes into detail on all of those topics and more.

My 2nd Book: Life Changes Quick *NEW*

After four years of traveling around Thailand doing Muay Thai, Scuba Diving and enjoying the good life on the cheap, it was time to go home.  The problem was, I was now four years older, 20 lbs over weight from drinking too many beers on the beach, and was broke.

I had less than $200 in my bank account and needed a job.  The plan was to move back in with my parents and start interviewing right away.  But then, something happened, and I woke up a year later in the best shape of my life, and with a location independent business that makes over $400,000 a year in sales.

www.LifeChangesQuick.com

Why you should read Life Changes Quick.
Don't get stuck in the same situation as I did.  Enjoy Muay Thai, enjoy Thailand but figure out a way to live the great life out here, instead of just getting by on the cheap.  This book shows 7 steps on how to get in the best shape of your life, start an online business and how I ended up meeting the girl of my dreams.

Check out both books and hopefully it will inspire you to make take the leap and start enjoying life out in Thailand.

Warm Regards,

Johnny

AKA Thailand - American Kickboxing Academy

Two years ago Mike Swick and Roger Huerta started planning to open a resort style Muay Thai and MMA gym together in Phuket.  Well that finally came true, minus Roger Huerta whom got cut out of the deal.  Introducing the new AKA Thailand, the official American Kickboxing Academy of Phuket, Thailand.

I'm planning to make my way down there in the next couple of months to check it out, so keep an eye out on this blog for details.  I was just down in Krabi, which is the island next to Phuket and the weather was incredible.  I took a few weeks off of training to escape poor air quality of the burning season in Chiang Mai which lasts the entire month of March each year but instead of training, I decided to do some rock climbing and scuba diving.

AKA Thailand is Officially Open:

The new AKA in Phuket reminds me a lot of the debunked Tiger Muay Thai Chiang Mai.  The layout is extremely similar except for the fact that AKA Phuket is near the beach while TMT Chiang Mai was near nothing.  The location of AKA Thailand is deal, as it is just a 5-10 minute scooter ride from the best beaches of Phuket including Rawai and Nai Harn.

AKA Thailand Location:

The Airport in Phuket is 40 minutes away from all of the Muay Thai gyms so make sure you take a Taxi Meter cab which is half of the price of the touts you first see.  The price to the gym should be 600 baht ($18US) Make sure you write down good directions by and even print out a map of the gym. AKA Thailand Location Map.

Also print write down or print out the following information before you come:
Phone: +668-8753-1602
WhatsApp/Viber: +668-8753-1602
General Manager: +668-1403-6863

Gym Address
AKA Thailand
47/31-32 Moo 4, Rawai Sub-district,
Muang Phuket District,
Province of Phuket 83130

Thai Address:
47/31-32 หมู่ที่ 4 ตำบลราไวย์,
อำเภอเมืองภูเก็ต, จังหวัดภูเก็ต
83130

MMA and BJJ Area at AKA Thailand
Costs of Living and Training:

All MMA and Muay Thai gyms in Phuket are expensive but AKA Thailand offers some great packages if you are only doing Muay Thai or No-Gi MMA/BJJ.  However for most of you that want to try out all classes, the unlimited membership that gives you access to everything is currently 10,200 baht ($340US) per month.  See AKA Thailand Pricing here.

If you want to save a lot of money while training at AKA Thailand, read my book that I wrote about living and training Muay Thai and MMA for cheap in Thailand.  The book was written before AKA Thailand opened but I share my experiences training and living in Phuket at both Phuket Top Team and Tiger Muay Thai which are the same price.  If you are even thinking about going to Thailand to train Muay Thai or MMA read my book 12 Weeks in Thailand: The Good Life on the Cheap before you come as I guarantee it'll save you a lot of money and a lot of headaches.

Read the book BEFORE you book your trip to Thailand.

Review of AKA Thailand, Phuket.

Keep an eye out on this blog and my facebook page for updates and reviews of AKA Thailand but I can already tell that this gym is going to be legit.  Brand new facilities and equipment a fantastic location that is away from the other big gyms and off the Tiger Muay Thai / Phuket Top Team street, and closer to the beach in Phuket.

The prices are the same, and if you follow the instructions in the book you'll be able to find a monthly apartment near the gym for less than 8,000 baht ($266US) a month near by the gym instead of paying hotel prices.

Warm Regards and I hope you enjoy the book!
Here's what some people have been saying about the book so far:

"Makes me want to pack my bags and go to Thailand today!  As in right now. Why am I not there right now!"  - Harry, Australia

"I sat down and started reading it only to stay up all night finishing the book in one go.  The author makes it so easy to fall in love with the idea of giving up everything for something better, traveling the world and being free.  Freedom really is all we have and this book makes me want to grab it and go!" - Caitlin, UK

"Thailand sounds like a good laugh. I read the book just entertainment value but now you have gotten me thinking that I can really do it myself.  Thanks for that."  Adam, UK

"At first I thought it was a typo and that you mean the"40 hour workweek" which would still be better than what I'm working now.  If Thailand is as amazing as you describe and you can really get massages for $6 an hour, I'm there!  Hilarious, easy to read book by the way.  I'm glad you did it and wrote about it."  -Josh, USA

Recommend Reading List: My Favorite Books

Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki

It was the first book that really changed my way of thinking about earning, saving and spending money.  My real father always taught me to save, not spend, and to work hard.  But realistically, he doesn't really understand money either.  Reading this book is like having a proper education in money, things your real dad should have taught you but didn't know how.

4-Hour Work Week by Timothy Ferris

I'm sure a lot of you have heard of this book before, some of you may have even read it.  But how many people have actually acted upon it?  When I first read it, I thought, wow this is cool.  Then put it down and went back to my same old boring office job and life.  It wasn't until I read it again and actually did the exercises that I got some value out of it.  If it wasn't for the four hour work week and Tim Ferris, I don't think I would have had the courage to move to Thailand. The chapter that really made the difference was.

"If shit hit the fan and everything fucked up, how long would it take me to rebuild my life."

I guessed, about 3-4 months I could have my life back on track.  Four years later, it was the best decision to roll that dice I've ever made.

I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell by Tucker Max

Not a life changing book or anything, but funny and an easy read about one guy going out getting drunk and laid every weekend.  His newer book, Assholes Finish First is surprisingly even better than the first.  I thought it would suck as most sequels do, maybe he became a better writer, who knows, but it was a better book.

Vodkaberg: 9 years in Russia by English Teacher X.

This book was AWESOME.  I didn't expect much out of it but a good friend recommended it to me.  If you liked Tucker Max, you will LOVE Vodkaberg.  The book is a memoir of an American guy that moves to a small town in Russia to teach English between the years 2000-2009.  It's a crazy time there especially in the early years when Russia's economy was fucked after the USSR, the girls were just as hot and all wanted to have sex with anyone that spoke English.

Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts

I have a rule with books, I keep it in mind when someone tells me I should read something.  I look into it if a second person recommends me the same book.  If a third person recommends a book to me, I go out and buy it, no questions asked.  This time, I happened to be in Sydney, Australia and a guy from my scuba diving group recommended it to me over dinner.  I asked him to drive me to a bookstore, and was shocked when I saw the $37.99AUS price tag.  Everything is more expensive in Australia.  But it was worth every penny.  Till this day Shantaram is one of the best books I've ever read.  It's about an Australian guy who escapes from prison and flees to India where he starts up a new life and somehow gets mixed up with the mob.

Born to Run by Christopher Mcdougall
If you're a runner, read this book.  You'll love it.  And I'm sure I'm the third person to recommend it to you by now, so just go and buy it.

Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
I'm sure you've heard of the Hunger Games, maybe you've even seen the movie.  But trust me, the book is really good.  It's the best Fiction book I've ever read by far.  In the book, you really get an amazing back story about life, hunger, and overcoming suffering.  I wouldn't recommend you read Twilight, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo or any other poorly written popular crap, but this is actually a very good book.

12 Weeks in Thailand: The Good Life on the Cheap by Johnny F.D.

And of course, I highly recommend you read 12 Weeks in Thailand, not just because I wrote it, but I genuinely feel that everyone that reads it will get something out of it.  The book is a combination of the lessons I've learned from Rich Dad, Poor Dad, The 4-Hour Workweek, and living and traveling around Thailand for the past four years.

I tried to write the book in an easy to read style such as my favorite books listed above, and they contain lots of funny stories about hooking up, traveling, all while educating you on how cheap it is to live in Thailand, go scuba diving, train Muay Thai, and to travel.  If you haven't read it yet, just do it.  It's on sale for $9.99US and it's worth every penny, I promise you.

I sincerely hope you enjoy reading some of my favorite books.   I never used to read much as a kid.  Growing up watching TV, playing video games, and surfing the internet was the norm, but then I discovered that each book I read, wasn't just for entertainment.  Books like these are often experiences, it's like traveling the world, fucking up and learning from the ups and downs without having to waste 4 years of doing it yourself.  These books are 4 years of the author's experiences for the $10.  A good book is literally the best value in the world.

Warm Regards,

12 Weeks in Thailand Book Reviews and Testimonials

The book has been out for a few weeks now and reviews are starting to show up all over the place for the book.  The very first person to finish reading "12 Weeks in Thailand" was a guy from Norway named Mikael.  I've never met him or spoken to him before, but reading his review made me instantly know that it was worth all the long days and sleepless nights I stayed up to finish the book.

Just as the 4-hour Workweek by Timothy Ferris changed my life by giving me both the tools and the inspiration to quit my job, travel the world and live my life on my own terms, I was hoping "12 Weeks in Thailand" would do the same, and it has.  I told myself that even if I only changed one life, if I only encouraged a single person, to go after what they want instead of letting their friends and their fears hold them back, it would be worth it.  Here is that very first review:

"I just finished reading your book.  It was really informative and inspiring. I admire you for what you've accomplished, and I appreciate you sharing your story.  I have to admit, I've been wanting to go to Thailand to train for two years now. I finally decided to go last October, and I'm leaving 31/01/13 - to stay for six months. I've been working 70 hours weeks to be able to do it, and my shape isn't that great.

I was getting really nervous, getting cold feet, having my friends doubt my judgement, wanting to hold me back. It made me question my decision. I was ready to stay home, in the same boring, exhausting and unhappy life, until I read your book.

It gave me hope that maybe I could fulfill my dreams, or at least find out who I really am, if I give myself a chance to do so. I'm a really shy and introverted 22 year old man, so I guess I don't really know much about what my life will bring. All I know is that you made me certain about taking the first step, and for that, I can't thank you enough. I just really wanted you to know that it means a lot that you shared your experience."

Best wishes,

Mikael from Norway

I know for me personally, I was scared to take a long trip out to Thailand, even though I knew it was relatively safe, I knew that it would make me happy, and I knew that I had so much more to gain than to lose.  But I was still scared.  Wayne from the U.S. recently quit his job to come train at Team Quest in Chiang Mai for a year.  He thanked me for inspiring him to come, he said that if I hadn't done it first and if he hadn't followed my blog and read my book, he never would have had the courage to do it.

"I read your book -- really interesting and very insightful information in there. Truly appreciate you sharing some of the stuff and the pointers on what to bring, where to train, eat, language, etc!

Thanks again for your blog and the book, very interesting and helpful!"

-Dmitry

"I am an impulse book buyer because I believe that that even if there is a single piece of wisdom or valuable insider information it is worth paying for. I'm planning to spend a month in Thailand very soon, with a focus on getting in shape under a Muay Thai camp.

As an Canadian Born Chinese I support Asian Americans (and Canadian, British, Australian Asians ect ect) and their arts and publishings.

I enjoyed the book and reading about your experiences."

I had just finished reading the book and recommend it as an enjoyable novel to read about an American who goes after what he wants in life and has some adventures doing it. Also if you are wanting to go to Thailand it is a must have. I enjoyed it.

The book is great! It's a perfect guide on Thailand, ideal for someone who's planning on going there to train and explore. I'm planning my trip and it really helped me with preparations, outlining what stuff to bring, what to look for when there, what to buy, etc. I really like how you open up and give personal experiences, with which I think many can relate. I also like the personal interesting and amusing stories of hookups and such! It does give a certain boost to make that leap and finally go there and do what you dream about. Thanks!

Once again, thank you to everyone who finished reading the book so far and left reviews, they really mean a lot to me to know that you guys are enjoying the book and getting a lot out of it.  The first review of 12 Weeks in Thailand I received is still the most inspiring and made me instantly know that it was the right thing to do writing this book.  I told myself that if my book even helps one person, it'll make all the hard work and effort worth it.  Also thank you to all of my friends that bought the book, it means a lot to me that you guys read about the last 4 years of my life, and my journey.  To everyone who bought the book, thank you for supporting my fight camp.  A portion of all book sales will continue to go to DonorsChoose.org which is a non-profit helping local teachers and education.

More Female Readers than Male, WTF?

So ever since my book "12 Weeks in Thailand" went on sale, I've noticed something really strange happening.  Most people would assume there are far more guys wanting to train Muay Thai and MMA in Thailand than women.  Just looking at the attendance of the gyms would verify that as there are always a minimum of 10 guys for every girl that trains in Thailand.  But for whatever reason the majority of the people who purchased my book have been women, and I'm really curious why that is!

I mean, I wrote the book as non-biased as possible, I even have a tiny chapter about dating guys from the gym and Thai men in the book for female readers, but really I had no idea that many girls would be interested in it.  I actually feel a bit embarrassed now because I talk very candidly about the relationships I've had while living and training in Thailand.  I admit to all the mistakes I've made dating and hooking up while here.

So i'm curious, how many female readers do I have and what is it about my blog, and my book that interests ya'll so much?

I know from a guy's point of view most guys want an escape from their lives back at home.  They want to get away from their jobs, family, dating, and pursue their passion for the sport.  But secretly, a lot of men just want to get in shape and others want to prove themselves as a warrior, as a fighter and see what they're made of.  Men want to feel like men, and in modern society where guys are wearing skinny jeans, spending $60 on hair cuts, and talking about Hollywood gossip, a lot of men want to get back to the root of it and train to be a fighter.

Anyway, I'm gonna go back to resting up as I fight tonight.  My pre-fight ritual is to lay around and try not to think about it too much. I figure that all the training I've done over the last 10 weeks has prepared me the best it could and now there's nothing left to do than step into the ring and fight my heart out. People kept asking me today whether or not I'm nervous.  The truth is, once I get to the stadium I'm going to freak out.  But I know if I start doing it now, I'm going to waste energy dumping all of my adrenaline. So every time I feel the butterflies come on, I just tell myself to relax and not think about it.

Luckily I slept like a baby last night, no problems at all.  I'm healthy, as close to 100% as I'm ever gonna be before a fight, and have no injuries.  Yi Wei, one of the students training here took me and Mirkko out to dinner last night as a good luck to me and a good bye to Mirkko who is going home to Estonia tomorrow.  It was my first time having real beef while here in Thailand, a Steak imported from Australia or New Zealand most likely. It's funny that in the America going to Sizzler is a bit of a joke, but here it's a gourmet meal out.  Thanks again Yi Wei for treating us, that was really kind and generous of you.

As for today, I started the morning with my usual green tea, followed by a glass of coconut milk.  For lunch I had Thai food, Chicken with Mixed Vegetables and a fried egg and it got me as full as you can expect for 35 baht ($1.16US) a few hours later I went to Marko Cash and Carry and bought 1/2 a roast chicken and a package of freeze dried mashed potatoes.   Combining it with a bit of Anchor grass fed butter from New Zealand and hot water, I had myself a really filling 2pm lunch which should give me enough energy for tonight.

The fights start at 9pm but as a foreigner, especially as a heavyweight by Thai standards, I'll most likely be the main event and might not fight until 11pm, so I'll make sure to eat something around 6pm as well.  Not sure what yet, but i'll keep it simple and relatively safe.  Now for my 2nd prefight ritual, watch random fights on youtube and relax.  Wish me luck.  And thanks again to everyone who has purchased my book, it really means a lot to me.  If you haven't already, you can download the 1st chapter for free here: www.12weeksinThailand.com

Whew!  I cannot believe the book is finally done!  I've literally been writing all day and all night for the past months since I started this project.  My days have literally been, wake up start writing. For the first time in my life I actually had to set a reminder alarm so I could remember to eat. Every night I fall asleep at my computer every night trying to finish up one last page.  What started out simply as a hobby, this blog, this lifestyle, training and fighting full time has become my passion.  I poured my heart and soul into this book and it's not just a guide to living and training in Thailand, it's four years of my life, all of my mistakes, my victories and my hardships all written down on paper for the world to see.  I would really like every single reader of this blog to have the opportunity to read the book in it's entirety, if for any reason you want a refund, I'm extending it to a full 90 days, and 100% money back, no questions asked.

If you absolutely cannot afford to buy the book right now, feel free to download the free preview chapter.  My goal is for everyone that has ever dreamed of coming to Thailand for whatever their 12 Weeks consists of, Scuba Diving, Traveling, Meditation, or Muay Thai to get their hands on this book.  Please help support My Fight Camp and 12 Weeks in Thailand by spreading the word on your facebook and to your friends.

New Facebook Page and a Secret Project..

Hey what's up everyone, it's been an amazing 4 years now since I first came to Thailand.  Most of you don't know this but my original trip was only supposed to be for 3 weeks.

I went home and came back for 3 months to do a Muay Thai camp.  I loved it so much, that's all I could dream about when I was back in the U.S.  So I came back again and did another three months.  Ended up loving MMA as well so I discovered Tiger Muay Thai and Phuket Top Team, both which I spent a significant amount of time at.

Anyways, to celebrate, I've finally started an facebook page and I would really appreciate it if you guys helped me get it off the ground by "Liking" it and "Sharing" it on your wall.  As of this morning I had exactly Zero friends, so let's see how many we can get once the ball gets rolling.

Secret Project:

One of the reasons why I finally started a facebook page, (yeah I know, welcome to 2006) is because I started turning my blog into a book.  A lot of friends have asked me if I ever thought about writing a book about my travels and my life but I always said no.  I figured, who the hell would want to read about my life, they can just go do it themselves.  Then I realized, a lot of guys haven't even been to Thailand yet.  They're still working at their office job, planning their trip, day dreaming about coming.

The other reason I didn't want to write this book is because why would I charge for something that is already free on my blog?  I started MyFightCamp because there wasn't really any information out there about all the different training camps in Thailand and I wanted to share my experience with everyone else.  If you read through the posts you'll find everything from how to not get ripped off by taxi drivers at the airport, to how much you should expect to spend each month and how much you should budget.  And if you read between the lines in all of my reviews you'll already know which gym I think is better, "Tiger Muay Thai vs. Phuket Top Team." vs. all of the others in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and even in the rest of Phuket.

I kind of already mentioned what the worst Muay Thai gym I ever trained at was and why I would never go back.  But to be honest, I can't really flat out say things like that on my blog.  Before I started my blog, I emailed one of the admins of one of the biggest Muay Thai Gym review websites and said to him.

"Bro, what the fuck.  This gym that you reviewed ___________ fucking sucks, and you must have known that.  Why didn't you just say straight up in your review that it sucks and to not go there?"

He sent me an email back saying, "yeah I know it sucks, but you know, this is Thailand, and you have to be politically correct about things."

So yeah, I figured, I guess he's kind of right.  You can write pros and cons of a gym, but it's up to the reader to read between the lines and figure it out for themselves.  But fuck it, in my book, I'm just going to flat out say what I really think, the truth.

The other reason why I'm writing this book is because I'm sick of getting the same questions all of the damn time.  I don't mind answering them because I know how hard it is to plan out a trip to Thailand and it is to pick a gym to dedicate your savings and and your only vacation of the year to train at.  But I'm always thinking, wtf, I wrote about this, just search the damn blog.  Turns out, people don't want to read through 3 years worth of blog entries.  So I'm just going write it in a way it makes sense and have all of the info in one place and in order with a table of contents and everything.  Yeah, super high class, I know.

Anyways, while I'm writing it, feel free to suggest what you're going to want in the book and I'll make sure it's in there.  Leave a comment before and ask away!

Warm Regards,

Johnny @ My Fight Camp

P.S. if you haven't done so already, wtf are you waiting for, "Like" us on facebook and help a brother out.
