I'm planning to make my way down there in the next couple of months to check it out, so keep an eye out on this blog for details. I was just down in Krabi, which is the island next to Phuket and the weather was incredible. I took a few weeks off of training to escape poor air quality of the burning season in Chiang Mai which lasts the entire month of March each year but instead of training, I decided to do some rock climbing and scuba diving.
AKA Thailand is Officially Open:
The new AKA in Phuket reminds me a lot of the debunked Tiger Muay Thai Chiang Mai. The layout is extremely similar except for the fact that AKA Phuket is near the beach while TMT Chiang Mai was near nothing. The location of AKA Thailand is deal, as it is just a 5-10 minute scooter ride from the best beaches of Phuket including Rawai and Nai Harn.

The Airport in Phuket is 40 minutes away from all of the Muay Thai gyms so make sure you take a Taxi Meter cab which is half of the price of the touts you first see. The price to the gym should be 600 baht ($18US) Make sure you write down good directions by and even print out a map of the gym. AKA Thailand Location Map.

All MMA and Muay Thai gyms in Phuket are expensive but AKA Thailand offers some great packages if you are only doing Muay Thai or No-Gi MMA/BJJ. Review of AKA Thailand, Phuket.
Keep an eye out on this blog and my facebook page for updates and reviews of AKA Thailand but I can already tell that this gym is going to be legit. Brand new facilities and equipment a fantastic location that is away from the other big gyms and off the Tiger Muay Thai / Phuket Top Team street, and closer to the beach in Phuket.
The prices are the same, and if you follow the instructions in the book you'll be able to find a monthly apartment near the gym for less than 8,000 baht ($266US) a month near by the gym instead of paying hotel prices.

The best idea is to visite Thailand, see the country, the most beautifull cities, to enjoy the food, to meet the friendly people, ath the same time to make an intensive course in Mauy Thai, then to come back home, healthy, wealthy and fit.

DeleteAfter an email correspondence with AKA Thailand that began a couple weeks ago and last saw me confirm just 2 days ago that I would come tonight, I never made it to training due to the worst business I've experienced in my 7 years of JiuJitsu, Muay Thai and MMA that has seen me work for 2 gyms and with several others. I confirmed a specific class/time that I would come, and mentioned that it was a long drive from my hotel. AFTER driving an hour South from Mai Khaw beach for the scheduled session I was informed over the phone (when I called from down the road for last-step directions) that the class was cancelled and training was over for the night. First huge screw-up: I confirmed a time that I would come and not only did they cancel the class but the correspondent I exchanged several messages with failed to mention it. Then, rather than 1. telling the instructor, "hey, nevermind, we're actually going to do the advanced class anyway. OR 2. saying, "I am so sorry, can I offer you a free class tomorrow (at which time if it were me I would have also given the person a shirt), or 3, just saying "let me ask one of the advanced guys to stay and roll with you so you can at least get some training in since you drove so far,"

I got "man that sucks, I don't know why she didn't tell you." They screwed up by not notifying me of the class change, forcing me to waste over 2 hours of driving plus a lot of gas, and then given the chance to right that mistake (in any of several very easy ways), nothing was done. I would not recommend anyone visit a camp that is run like this. There are many other options on the island.
Hey Dan, oh wow, I'm sorry to hear about the experience you've had at AKA. I hope it was just a one off class cancellation and they don't make it a habit. I do know that things in Thailand can be a bit more relaxed as most people don't have to deal with long commutes, scheduling and planning as they would back home as most people live at or near the gym. But I agree they definitely could have handled the situation differently.
