Where Should I Go Next? Team Lakay in the Philippines or Muay Thai in Chiang Mai? Where should I go?

Hey guys, I'm getting ready for another 6 month fight camp and i'm trying to decide if I should go train at Team Lakay in Baguio, Philippines since I am flying through PI, or if I should go straight to Chiang Mai and train Muay Thai?

Basically the first month I will be getting back into shape.  I fractured my foot 1.5 months ago and it's still healing, so I've been lifting weights, doing pull ups, 5 days a week here in the U.S. but no cardio or fight training.  Has anyone ever trained at Lakay or in PI?  Here's what I can gather so far.

Pros of Training at Team Lakay -

Baguio is at altitude which is great for cardio.  Although it's only 1,500 meters it'll still be beneficial.  Phuket is at sea level and Chiang Mai is at 314m.     2,400 metres (8,000 ft) would be ideal though.

Prices seem crazy cheap, 500php ($11US) to join and 800php ($20US) per month almost sounds too good to be true. I emailed them to clarify.

Cons of Training in the Philippines -

Right now I want to concentrate mainly on muay thai and get some more fights under my belt before I start training MMA.  I

The Team Lakay website, facebook and google searches have almost no information on camps, accommodation, training schedules, or anything.

Chiang Mai Muay Thai -

As for training in Chiang Mai, where would you guys go?  I got a recommendation to go to KC Muay Thai and it sounds exactly like what I want.  I might check them out first if I go to Chiang Mai, and then check out the other gyms while i'm there such as the new Tiger Muay Thai.

If it was up to you, where would you go?  I have to fly through the Philippines anyways, so should I spend a month or two at Lakay Tap Team or should I go straight to Chiang Mai and focus on Muay Thai?  Leave a comment and let me know.

  1. Johnny,
It's Chris from FB...I was in CM for only a week but loved it. I was supposed to be there for 2 weeks but spent an extra week in PKT so it cut into my time. Trained @ Team Quest. Def recommend them. They have an excellent MT staff (one is a Lump. Champ, Kru Gen and his twin Joe is head trainer). All speak good English. They're also part of the int'l chain , Team Quest so they also offer MMA classes when you want to get back into that. I posted my review on my blog:

(there's a backlink to your site as well). When do you think you'll be moving there? CM is def one of the places I'll be living long-term once I get out there (PKT and Isaan are the other places I'll be living at).

Thx for your advice on what to tell my rents...my cousin called me today and said my mom was wilding out to my aunt or something, lol, oh snap!

Let me know if you need help getting in touch w/ anyone...I also kept in contact w/ the owner of the gym , Ian (Canadian)

  2. I'd probably try Team Lakay, heard many good stuff about them but have not heard much about Chiang Mai Muay Thai.

  3. Hi Johnny,

I am also considering training at Lakay but have been unable to get any information from them about training schedules and accommodation.
Would it be possible to post these on the sight?

  4. Hey Johnny -- Definitely keep me updated about your experience training in Chiang Mai. I came across your post from last year, and when I visited your front page I was happy to see that you might be heading back there.

I'm traveling to Chiang Rai for a month in January and will be staying an extra month in Chiang Mai (a city I fell in love with 2 years ago) in order to train in Muay Thai, which I've trained in here in the States off and on ever since I got back from my last Thailand trip.

So any insight you have into the different gyms is extremely valuable. I'm sure there are many that don't have sites, as well. My current thought is to choose one online and sign up for a week, the spend that week asking around and exploring the City for something more authentic and remote where I can spend the rest of my month. I may be rusty with my conversational Thai, but I'll be refreshing it in the coming months. (Was lucky enough to meet a great instructor while there, and she now gives me lessons via Skype.)

Anyway... your blog is great. I wish you the best in your journey and really appreciate you taking the time to share your experiences.
