Man, what a great day. I got to Venice Beach, California around 11am and checked in. Met a bunch of guys that were there for the try outs as well and most of them flew in from other states for the opportunity. I would say that 30% of the guys there were really serious about trying out, especially the ones that came first thing in the morning and the rest did it just for fun or to give it a shot.
Overeem and Masato
Alistar Overeem was probably the one fighter I wanted to meet most, so I was excited to meet him in person. He seems exactly the way he portrays himself on tv, a bit cocky, but confident and huge. Not quite as big as he was a few months ago before the steroid testing though.
I also bumped into Sefan "Skyscraper" Struve, he wasn't even part of the event. Just there to hang out, and he was a really cool, friendly guy.
Overall the try outs were cool. They broke us up in groups of 10 with a trainer each. Did one round of pad work for practice then took turns going on stage to do 1 minute of shadow boxing and one minute of padwork in front of the judges. I don't expect to get picked, nor should the 299 other guys there but it was a fun day and good publicity for K-1. I think the plan is them to pick one fighter from the try outs to potentially join K1. But either way, it was fun, I got a free K1 shirt and two free tickets to the K-1 Fight September 8th in Los Angeles which I wanted to go anyways.
Above is a video of the try outs, i'm in it for like 3 seconds.
