Today was supposed to be a rest day, my shins are banged up and bruised from going super hard all last week, and I shouldn't be kicking with them at least for another day. I also wasn't feeling so well today so a day off would have been smart. However, I wanted to make sure it was a genuine need for rest day and not just me making up excuses and being lazy. So I had some caffeine an hour before the afternoon session started, that way, I would want to get up off my ass regardless.
Instead of training, I ended up scrubbing my bathroom. It's quite a smart way to figure out if you're being lazy or not, because you either go get a work out or you end up with a clean house, you win. After spending 30 minutes cleaning my bathroom, I sat down at my computer and did a bit of proof reading and putting the finishing touches on the book. It's so close to being done, and it came out great! I'm really excited to finally share it with everyone. The book is literally 4 years in the making and it ended up being more of an autobiography about my crazy life living in Thailand, my relationships, working as a divemaster, and of course, training and fighting in Thailand.
Anyway, after 45 minutes of immersive writing, my workrave alarm locks up my screen and tells me to take a break. I decided to go down to the gym, since it's literally downstairs, and do some light weights or stretching. What I love about living cat the gym is even when you don't plan on training, you end up doing something, and today I did my burpee pyramid challenge. I started with 10 full burpees including the squat, jump back, full push up, pop back into squat, and finishing with the vertical jump. Shadow boxed for 30 seconds then did 9, followed by another 30 seconds of shadow boxing and 8. By doing the pyramid, it gets easier as you get more tired which allows you to keep proper form the entire time. It was a total of 55 burpees and a pretty good workout.
Then I decided to do it all over again. It was my first time doubling up on my burpee pyramid as just two months ago I could hardly get through one set. But since I didn't run today and it didn't involve kicking, I figured why not and blasted them out. After the 110 burpees I decided to do some kettle bell swings, two sets of 20. Followed by some shoulder lifts with light weights and ending with a bunch of situps.
It's funny that my rest day here in Thailand was a better workout than most of my actual workouts when I was back home in the U.S.
Here's a random picture of my lunch from last week's bike and hike trip up the Doi Suthep moutain. I've never had dried strawberries or dried cantaloupe before, but it was quite good, especially mixed with the raw almonds and Brazil nuts.
Keep in touch and keep a look out for the book that is coming very very soon!
Warm Regards,
Johnny @ My Fight Camp
